National Suicide Prevention Week with World Suicide Prevention Day

Tomorrow marks the beginning of National Suicide Prevention Week with World Suicide Prevention Day.

Hence, it’s the perfect time to raise awareness in our circle of family members, friends, and co-workers, that all of us can take action to prevent suicide in our world.

How? We can start by not being judgmental and allowing space for honest dialogue. Allow your loved ones who are showing warning signs to express how they truly feel. Tell them how much you love them, and let them know how valuable their life is. That we are energy transformers with the power to transform sadness into joy, anger into peace, and fear into love. This might not be enough I must say. So be sure to also point them to the support systems in your community that offer professional help.

Suicide prevention is a sensitive topic for me. You see, when I was in my early teens my eldest sister committed suicide. She was the life of the party, you know. I adored her. It wasn’t until it was too late that my family realized she was showing warning signs: talking about wanting to die, talking about feeling hopeless or having no reason to live, withdrawing, or feeling isolated.

When I received the terrible news, I remember feeling if I had just told her how much I loved her the last time we spoke, maybe she would have reconsidered. Everyone she left behind who loved her dearly felt guilty in some way or another.
Honestly, I don’t know if I had told her how much I loved her, she would have not taken her life. Or that if she had sought help from a professional, she would still be with us today.

But I do know that life is beautiful and it stinks my friends. It has moments when we are mesmerized by its magic, kindness, and beauty and others when we wonder why bad things happen especially to those we feel are good people. Personally, I have learned to accept this duality of life and use the energy generated from its ups and downs to write these songs and poems that heal my spirit.

Now I’m sharing them with the world in hope that it will help prevent suicide and create the awareness that none of us have crashed this cosmological party. We are here; therefore, every one of us matters.
